How Often Should a Local Business Post on Instagram? A West Palm Beach Guide
Short answer: for most local businesses in West Palm Beach and around Palm Beach County, 3 to 5 Instagram feed posts a week plus Stories most days is the sweet spot. That's enough to keep growing and stay top of mind without burning out your team or posting junk just to hit a number.
We get this question constantly, from restaurant owners, boutique gyms, salons, realtors, you name it. So here's how we actually think about it at So Chill Media.
What the data says
Buffer looked at about 2.1 million Instagram posts from roughly 102,000 accounts to figure out how posting frequency affects growth. A few things jumped out:
Accounts posting 3 to 5 times a week grew followers more than twice as fast as accounts posting 1 to 2 times a week.
Reach per post went up too. Moving from 1 to 2 posts a week to 3 to 5 was the biggest jump, about 12% more reach per post.
Weeks with zero posts actually performed below an account's normal baseline. Going quiet costs you.
Posting more didn't hurt per post reach. Going past 5 a week still helped, but the gains got smaller.
Translation: you don't need to post every day to win. You need to show up every single week.
Consistency beats volume
This is the part most people get wrong. They post 7 times in one week because they're fired up, then disappear for three weeks when it gets busy. The data rewards the opposite.
Pick a number you can hit even during your craziest week, and stick to it. Three great posts every week beats ten posts one week and nothing the next. Your followers (and the algorithm) learn to expect you.
A realistic weekly plan for a local business
Here's a simple rhythm we use as a starting point for a lot of South Florida businesses:
2 to 3 Reels a week for reach. This is how new people in West Palm, Jupiter, Delray or Boca find you. Behind the scenes, your team, your product in action, a quick tip.
1 to 2 carousels or photo posts a week for the people who already follow you. Menus, specials, before and afters, "how to book" posts, event recaps.
Stories most days. Today's special, a quick poll, a reshare of a happy customer. Stories are where your regulars live.
That's 3 to 5 feed posts a week. If you want the deeper breakdown of what goes in each format, check out our Reels vs carousels guide.
Should you post more during season?
If you're in hospitality or tourism down here, yes, lean in a little. From roughly November through April, snowbirds and visitors are scrolling for where to eat, stay and hang out. Bumping up to 5 or 6 feed posts a week during season makes sense if you have the content to back it up.
In the slower summer months, it's totally fine to settle back to 3 a week. Just don't go dark.
When posting less is fine
If you're a service business (a law firm, a contractor, a med spa) and you don't have a ton of visual moments, 2 to 3 strong posts a week can absolutely work. Quality matters more than hitting a magic number. A blurry phone pic posted just to "stay active" does more harm than good.
The floor we'd recommend for anyone: at least 1 to 2 feed posts a week, every week.
How to keep up without losing your mind
Batch it. Film or shoot once or twice a month and pull a few weeks of content from that session.
Plan the week on Monday. Decide your 3 to 5 posts before the week gets away from you.
Reuse your best stuff. A Reel that did well can become a carousel, a Story, and a Google Business Profile post.
Watch your insights monthly, not daily. One post is a coin flip. A month is a pattern.
FAQ
How many times a week should a small business post on Instagram?
For most small businesses, 3 to 5 feed posts a week is the sweet spot, plus Stories most days. If that's too much, start at 2 a week and stay consistent.
Is posting every day on Instagram too much?
Not if the quality holds up. Data from Buffer shows growth keeps climbing past 5 posts a week, but the gains get smaller. For most local businesses, daily posting isn't worth it if it means weaker content.
Do Instagram Stories count toward posting frequency?
Stories are separate from feed posts. Think of feed posts and Reels as how you grow, and Stories as how you stay in touch with people who already follow you. Do both.
What happens if I stop posting for a few weeks?
You lose momentum. Buffer's study found weeks with no posts performed below an account's normal baseline, so it takes time to get back to where you were.
